A few minutes ago, on a whim, I ran a command that I used when building a distributed peer chat application using Bonjour and Cocoa Distributed Objects. I opened up a terminal and ran:
dns-sd -B
By default, this browses the local subnet for all Bonjour records indicating an HTTP server (services exposed through Bonjour of type _http._tcp.). Interestingly enough, I got a hit...and it was off my TiVo!
Check out the results:
runemage:~ kevin$ dns-sd -B
Browsing for _http._tcp
Timestamp A/R Flags if Domain Service Type Instance Name
20:53:19.500 Add 2 6 local. _http._tcp. DVR-7622
I'm not sure why it excites me, but I love finding interesting back-end type networking stuff like this. I knew that TiVo made itself available to Windows applications running TiVo Desktop, but I had no idea that it was exposing itself to Macs via Bonjour... very classy.
