A molten flow of beta goodness erupts from Mount Microsoft

posted Wed 05 Mar 08

First, let's take a look at what Microsoft dropped today:

ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions Preview: (also known as the "ASP.NET MVC bits")
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/9/a/79a7153c-4cb4-4898-a984-6f01d565cba9/AspNetMVCPreview2-setup.msi

Silverlight 2 Beta 1 Tools for Visual Studio 2008:

This set of tools will also install the Silverlight 2.0 runtime and the Silverlight 2.0 SDK.

Here are some videos of Scott Guthrie's tutorials on Silverlight 2.0:

Expression Blend 2.5:

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 (for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, other links to other versions are available):

And, not necessarily related to MIX '08, but I also found a link to the C# microkernel Operating System codenamed Singularity (links to Codeplex):

The only thing I can really say to this much new stuff from Microsoft in a single day is that my spare time just went out the Window. I plan on spending a lot of time digging into the ASP.NET MVC stuff as well as Silverlight. At some point I want to look into Singularity but as it is still just a research project I can probably defer that for a while. I will probably not spend much time looking at IE8 either... the two new highlighted features, "Slices" and "Activities" both gave me a meh feeling. I get the feeling that I've seen them both somewhere before... but I can't quite *OSX / Safari* put a finger on it....

Anyway, I will let you know how the exploration of the new stuff goes. After all, I somehow feel as though it is my duty to stick my hand into the burning flame of new goodies so you can see what color my flesh burns :)
