My backpack makes for interesting training material at the airport

posted Wed 27 Feb 08

I was going through the usual routine when showing up for the security check-in. I was prepared to take my shoes off and let the world bask in the aromatic freshness that continually drifts upward from my raw feet. I was also prepared to turn on the Macbook Pro ... I have been averaging roughly a 33% chance of being asked to turn on my laptop when going through security.

So I take the laptop out of the bag and put it in its own tray... admittedly I get a little worried - those trays aren't the cleanest things I've ever encountered.... I was kind of worried about what kind of funk the MBP might pick up in transit, but oh well - the price you pay for fast, "efficient", air travel.

Anyway, it comes to the part where my backpack goes through and I see one guy start smiling. He turns to the other screener and says (quote may not be 100% exact, it was pretty noisy): "You wanted to see what it looks like when there's a lot of electronics in a single bag? Take a look at _that_." The screener at the end of the line (not the one looking at the xray asked me what all I had in there.

I replied, "Two USB hard drives, one spare battery, a power adapter, 1 iPhone, 2 books, my wallet, 3 video adapters and 2 USB cables."

The blank stare I received in response was priceless. Absolutely priceless.

And before you even think of asking. Why yes, I DO need all of that equipment with me. This is the result of me traveling light. If I had things my way, I would bring a complete second laptop as a backup just in case.

Anyway, if you happen to be attending the IWTC tomorrow, see you there!

Well, I have arrived. Given the weak value of the dollar, I feel as though I got utterly ripped off by the taxi driver, but, it was a published fare and he took a straight route, so I can't complain (much). Sucking down coffee (which is quite good actually) left and right trying to recover from a bumpy flight. Hopefully I'll be in better shape before the presentation. The last thing anybody needs is to see me yawn while presenting!

Wow, you are traveling light. I also carry a 5-port Gigabit switch, an AirPort Express, a couple of Ethernet cables, two or three thumb drives, a mouse, and a three outlet power adaptor. I have carried a second laptop or a Mac Mini for the preso in the past.
