SharePoint Book Pre-Orders are doing quite well

posted Mon 19 Mar 07

Just checked the Amazon.com page for SharePoint 2007 Development Unleashed. Looks like we're at rank 7,200 today! I don't know much about how Amazon.com figures out these rankings, but the book I just finished reading on the train into work this morning, Academ's Fury, by Jim Butcher, had a sales rank of 6,000 this morning. The fact that our SharePoint book is only a thousand or so points off of a USA today bestselling novel by the author of the Dresden Files is a huge win for me.

I want to thank everyone who has pre-ordered our SharePoint Development book, and of course, encourage everyone who hasn't to rush out and pre-order it so that you'll have it the split second it hits the shelves! :)

Hi Kevin

I recently purchased Microsoft® Visual C# 2005 Unleashed - ISBN: 0672327767, and have been working my way through the book. At various stages, you refers to 'the code accompanying the book'. There was no CD with the Book - I'm not sure if there was supposed to have been.

I have been able to access the Safari online version at http://safari.samspublishing.com/0672327767 , there is no source code here other than what is in the book. On the SAMS site, http://www.samspublishing.com/bookstore/product.asp?isbn=0672327767&rl=1 there is a Download section, with a ZIP file that contains code samples. However, this is incomplete.

I will give Chapter 29 - Creating Custom ASP.NET Providers - as an example. On the first page in the chapter, on page 427, you state: "The code listings in this chapter tend to be longer than most of the code listings in the rest of the book. As such, to follow along you may want to use the actual code accompanying the book rather than trying to type the samples line-by-line."

This is impossible to do, because there is no chapter 29 section in the downloaded ZIP file provided on the SAMS site.

Again in Chapter 29, and more importantly, on page 431 paragraph 3, the following instructions are given: "Through the magic of partial classes, some of the private utility methods that make the code in Listing 29.1 possible are contained in a separate file called MembershipProvider_Utils.cs, but are still part of the class. These have been omitted from the listing to save room in the chapter, but the methods are available in the code accompanying the book." It is IMPOSSIBLE to get the code sample given with the book working without this file "MembershipProvider_Utils.cs", which has been omitted from the book, and is not in the ZIP provided by SAMS.

Could you please follow up this issue, and let me know how to get a copy of the code that is supposed to accompany the book?

Regards Neal Hudson

Neal - there was a problem with the code download in that the numbers of the chapters labelled in the ZIP files are not always the same as the corresponding chapters. I don't have the stuff with me, but if you check the code for other chapters, you may find the code for the ASP.NET provider chapter in there. There was a mess-up in that the code I supplied during draft 1 was mixed with final code, resulting in final code using draft chapter numbers.

Hi Kevin

I left a comment here earlier but it appears to have been deleted (I also replied to your mail message). Unfortunately I had already checked to see if the file was included under a different chapter, but it is not. I am certain that the file in question from Chapter 29 - MembershipProvider_Utils.cs is not provided in the ZIP file, and therefor is missing. The ZIP on the SAMS site is incomplete. Could you please look into this, without the completed samples it kind of renders a lot of that chapter useless, Regards Neal

Neal, I'm looking into this. I need to find the hard drive I was using when I wrote that book :) It's been quite a while since I've spent the last year working on SharePoint stuff, not C# 2005.
